No. 2 Stanford eliminated while Ole Miss stays hot

No. 5 Texas A&M is now the highest-ranked team remaining in the College World Series after No. 2 Stanford was eliminated by No. 14 Auburn on Monday afternoon. It was the first time the Cardinal — playing in their 18th CWS — were eliminated in two games. Auburn closer Blake Burkhalter struck out five in the final 2 1/3 innings to nail down the victory and earn his 16th save.

Rebels continue to roll

Ole Miss improved to 2-0 in Omaha with an impressive 13-5 victory over Arkansas. The Rebels are 7-0 in the NCAA Tournament and are now one win away from advancing to the championship series. The top four hitters in the Ole Miss lineup collected nine hits and drove in eight runs, led by Justin Bench, who was 4 for 6. The Rebels will play the winner of tomorrow’s Arkansas-Auburn game on Wednesday night.

Well done, freshman

Hunter Elliott receives a huge ovation as he leaves for Ole Miss. The freshman lefty lasted 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. The Rebels lead Arkansas 10-3, continuing their dominant work on the mound behind starters Elliott and Dylan DeLucia. Elliott in the NCAA postseason has surrendered two earned runs in 18 2/3 innings. He’s in line for his fifth win of the season.

Relentless Rebels

A two-run homer to right field, Calvin Harris’ second of the season, against Jaxon Wiggins extends Ole Miss’ lead. The Rebels are relentless tonight. Arkansas has tried four pitchers. It’s 9-3 in the fifth inning. Lefty Elijah Trest is now working in the Razorbacks bullpen.

Fourth time is a charm for Arkansas pitching

Finally, a solid inning for Arkansas on the mound as the Razorbacks turned to their fourth pitcher, sophomore right-hander Jaxon Wiggins to throw the fourth inning. Prior to tonight, 15 of Wiggins’ 16 appearances this season came as a starter. An interesting strategy, for sure. If Wiggins can keep Ole Miss quiet and the Hogs come back, they’ll be no worse for the shuffled pitching order. Each of the three relievers who pitched before Wiggins would likely be available to return on short rest this week. Lefty Hunter Elliott, who started for the Rebels, remains at work in the fourth inning. Ole Miss still leads 6-3.

big blast

The sun didn’t matter on this one. That ball flew 416 feet off the bat of Tim Elko, a two-run shot against Arkansas reliever Evan Taylor. Elko’s 23rd homer of the season puts the Rebels up 4-1 in the top of the second inning.

Huge out for the Arkansas bullpen

Trailing 2-0 in the first inning against Ole Miss, Arkansas turned to the bullpen. Senior left-hander Evan Taylor trotted in to face Ole Miss third baseman Garrett Wood. The bases were loaded. And with one pitch, Taylor forced a groundout to shortstop. Taylor has been reliable for the Razorbacks all season. In 39 innings, he posted a 3.46 ERA. His presence early, though, indicates how important a role Arkansas’ bullpen is going to play in the rest of this game.

Plenty of buzz for Rebels-Razorbacks

An electric-guitar rendition of the National Anthem sent a buzz through the crowd ahead of this Ole Miss-Arkansas game for control of their side of the College World Series bracket. Both of these teams were bounced quickly from the SEC tournament last month and have since rolled through the NCAA postseason.

The Rebels are 6-0, and the Razorbacks are 6-1 this month. The winner tonight will wait until Wednesday to play again and possess the inside track to the championship series. Arkansas won the final two of three games when these teams met April 29 to May 1 in Fayetteville.

Intrigued by their new fan

The now-famous bird has intrigued Auburn coach Butch Thompson. He inquired about it in the post-game press conference, saying he had not seen it struggling during the game. It was clearly not a “war eagle,” but these guys from Auburn are a compassionate group.

What a performance from Foster

Auburn starting pitcher Trace Bright on Cole Foster: “It was amazing for him to finish that game.”

Foster was fighting an illness again Monday and played through 95-degree conditions. His sixth-inning double scored three runs in the Tigers’ key rally. Foster left early in Auburn’s first game Saturday, and he was not available to the media after the 6-2 elimination-game win against Stanford on Monday.

Foster steps up for Tigers

Cole Foster left Saturday’s game vs. Ole Miss after four innings because of illness. His response on Monday was a go-ahead three-run double. He stood on second base as the Auburn faithfully roared with his hands on his knees, trying to tough out an illness in 95-degree heat.
